Abstract

The hills and mountains of Northern Luzon, Philippines, are home to communities that have developed distinctive cultural identities, adaptive agricultural practices, and strong ties to their ancestral lands. This chapter explores the dynamic relationship between these mountain communities and their environment, emphasizing indigenous knowledge systems, traditional practices such as rice terracing, and the role of community support in sustaining livelihoods. Northern Luzon is particularly significant for having the highest forest cover in the country, which makes the region vital for biodiversity conservation. The paper examines the current status of biodiversity research, indigenous cultural heritage, and the ecological richness of the region. It also addresses emerging challenges, including pressures from modernization, land-use change, and the struggle to balance human rights with the rights of nature. The chapter highlights the need for inclusive and culturally sensitive strategies that integrate ecological conservation with the protection of indigenous practices and knowledge. It calls for continued research, community engagement, and policy development to ensure that both cultural heritage and biodiversity are preserved amid growing environmental and social pressures.
