Abstract

A significant effort was put into defining the addressing architecture of the IP version 6 protocol, resulting in the latest specification in [ RFC4291 ] . Unlike IPv4 addresses, which are 32 bits long, IPv6 addresses are 128 bits long and serve as identifiers for network interfaces and sets of interfaces in an IPv6 internetwork. IPv6 has three basic types of addresses: unicast, multicast, and anycast. Unlike IPv4, IPv6 does not support broadcast addresses; their function is instead replaced by various types of special IPv6 multicast addresses.
