Abstract

This chapter describes the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6) [ RFC8415 ] , a Client/Server protocol that enables IPv6 nodes on a link to obtain IPv6 addresses and prefixes, as well as other network configuration parameters such as Domain Name System (DNS) Server addresses and domain names. IPv6 hosts need configuration information to configure IPv6 addresses on their interfaces, perform domain name-to-IPv6 address mapping, obtain time references (from a Network Time Protocol (NTP) Server) for synchronizing their local clocks, and acquire other information such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Server addresses for multimedia (voice and video) communication with other IPv6 hosts.
