Abstract

Melon ( Cucumis melo L.), a globally important horticultural crop, serves as a model system for studying phenotypic diversity due to its remarkable genetic variability. While modern genome sequencing technologies have enabled the identification of numerous quantitative trait loci and candidate genes, persistent limitations in genetic transformation efficiency and CRISPR-based genome editing systems continue to pose challenges for functional gene validation. This knowledge gap highlights the urgent need to develop novel genetic resources that combine enhanced disease resistance with superior fruit quality traits, which are critical for next-generation breeding technologies. In this chapter, the authors systematically summarize recent advances in melon genomics, applications of genome sequencing, and molecular breeding strategies. They further propose future research directions focusing on superior allele mining and multi-omics integration to accelerate melon breeding progress.
