Modelling Projects
Abstract
This chapter contains a selection of eight small modelling projects which may be attached by the techniques we have been through in the book. A modelling project differs from regular exercises by being rather open and may sometimes have no real solution. In fact, it is often said that modelling projects are most instructive if they address topics that have no complete solution. The projects are presented without any solutions, leaving it to the student to judge when enough is enough. The projects span diverse application areas, including athletics (the Student 10 km Race), transport phenomena (two-phase porous media flow, reduced speed limits, and traffic lights at a pedestrian crossing), and environmental systems (water cleaning, river contamination, and lake sedimentation). Biological and biomedical contexts are also addressed through projects on insect swarming and drug distribution after extravascular administration.
