Abstract

This chapter follows Captain Ove and his crew from the first moments of the day. What begins with breakfast at the hotel unfolds into a reflection on the history of flying and the changes in the industry. Ove recalls the glamour of earlier decades when air travel was theatre, and contrasts it with today’s fast-paced operations. Ove insists that the essence of the craft remains unchanged: the responsibility to bring people home safely. Through scenes at the airport and in the crew room, the chapter shows how rituals of paperwork, coffee, and security shape the atmosphere of the day. Ove’s words reveal a quiet philosophy of airmanship in which trust, respect, and professionalism are established long before the aircraft moves. In the crew briefing, the roles of captain and first officer are defined, decisions are rehearsed, and safety is built into the rhythm of preparation. What looks from the outside like routine and formality emerges as the lived foundation of aviation culture.
