Abstract

Ceramics are versatile materials that have been widely used over a decade for potential applications due to their intrinsic characteristic properties such as hardness, mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and high resistance to different critical environments. However, owing to the growing interest in advanced functional ceramic composites, biopolymers are incorporated into ceramics to attain specific physical and chemical properties. This chapter focuses on common biopolymers used with ceramics and their potential applications in biomedical, environmental, and energy storage fields. It explores the functionality of ceramic-based composite adsorbents and membranes, highlighting their effectiveness in environmental remediation and filtration processes. The roles of biopolymers in ceramics are also examined, with emphasis on their contributions to biomedical applications. Additionally, the chapter discusses the energy storage potential of biopolymer-based ceramics, showcasing their promise in sustainable technologies. This chapter summarizes the potential benefits and opportunities of these multifunctional materials, which offer ecological advantages while addressing critical challenges in biomedical, environmental, and energy sectors.
