Abstract

The escalating global demand for energy and the challenges posed by fossil fuel depletion and environmental pollution have ignited a pressing need for sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions. This chapter addresses this urgency by delving into the valorization of agro-waste as catalysts for biodiesel production—a novel and environmentally conscious approach to energy generation and waste management. As fossil fuels contribute to approximately 81% of global energy consumption and overuse engenders severe ecological repercussions, exploring renewable alternatives becomes paramount. Biodiesel, a biodegradable and renewable fuel, emerges as a viable contender due to its resemblance to conventional diesel fuel and its potential for reduced emissions. This study focuses on the catalytic aspects of biodiesel synthesis, particularly heterogeneous base catalysts derived from agricultural waste. These catalysts exhibit advantages over traditional options and align with sustainability principles by utilizing abundant and renewable resources. This chapter comprehensively evaluates various catalysts and highlights their performances, advantages, and limitations. By utilizing agricultural waste as catalysts and in waste reduction efforts, this work propels the integration of clean energy production and waste management, fostering a greener future built upon scientific innovation, technological prowess, and environmental stewardship.
