Abstract

Magnetic nanoparticles have transformed biomedical imaging and therapy, especially in MRI-based theragnostics, an innovative method that integrates diagnostics and medicines for personalized medicine. This chapter explores the essential concepts, classifications, and developments of MRI technology, highlighting the crucial contribution of magnetic nanoparticles in improving MRI contrast and facilitating multifunctional medicinal applications. The distinctive magnetic characteristics of nanomaterials, including superparamagnetism and elevated surface area, render them optimal for targeted drug delivery, hyperthermia, and MRI contrast enhancement. This chapter examines the synthesis, functionalization, and application of magnetic nanoparticles, including iron oxides, ferrites, and hybrid nanostructures, emphasizing their biocompatibility and versatility in theragnostics. The text addresses the amalgamation of magnetic nanoparticles with sophisticated imaging modalities, such as T1- and T2-weighted imaging, functional MRI (fMRI), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), to facilitate accurate diagnosis and focused therapy strategies. Critical problems, including toxicity, stability, and regulatory issues, are thoroughly assessed alongside prospective developments, such as the creation of multifunctional nanoplatforms and breakthroughs in AI-driven imaging.
