Abstract

Over the past several years, imaging techniques with super-resolution capacity have received much attention from researchers by overcoming the diffraction restriction of light, allowing the tissues and cells of living organisms to be imaged at nanometric resolution. The development of fluorescent materials exhibiting specific characteristics that can be integrated into the development of optical imaging technique hardware has made this imaging revolution more attractive. Regarding this imaging revolution, the synthesis and use of fluorescent nanoparticle (FNP) probes, based on the improvement of the characteristics of conventional fluorescent materials and offering properties such as photostability, high resolution, and high level of brightness, have become the focus of attention. Chapter 3 discusses the advantages of FNPs over typical imaging techniques. Moreover, we review the types and properties, synthesis thechniques, bioimaging and therapeutic applications, and last the biocompatibility challenges of FNPs.
