Abstract

Cancer is a leading cause of mortality globally, necessitating technological upgrades in diagnosis and therapeutic strategies. Conventional cancer therapies, namely surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, often lack specific cell direction, resulting in systemic toxicity and adverse effects. This limitation highlights the need for cancer theragnostics, a groundbreaking approach that integrates diagnosis and therapy for precise, personalized treatment. Smart nanomaterials have emerged as a good substitute in theragnostics, providing specific drug delivery, improved imaging, and improved therapeutic efficacy. Nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, and bioinspired nanomaterials enable site-specific drug release, minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Their application in oral cancer and other malignancies shows significant potential for early detection and effective therapy. Recent advancements in nanotechnology, including multifunctional nanoplatforms and stimuli-responsive nanocarriers, have further enhanced cancer treatment outcomes. Despite these benefits, limitations such as biocompatibility, toxicity, and industrial production impede clinical translation. However, ongoing research is acknowledging these issues, paving the way for the future integration of nanomaterials in personalized oncology. This chapter explores the urgent need for cancer theragnostics, contrasts conventional therapies with nanotechnology-based approaches, and discusses the diverse nanomaterials used in modern cancer treatment. Additionally, it highlights recent advancements, applications, advantages, challenges, and prospects of nanomaterials in cancer theragnostics. Theragnostics can revolutionize cancer management by harnessing nanotechnology, offering more effective and safer treatment modalities. Understanding these emerging strategies is crucial in optimizing cancer therapy and improving patient outcomes.
