Abstract

Enhancing efficiency, reliability, and sustainability in modern energy systems is dependent on smart grids (SG) and energy management. SG is a groundbreaking innovation in the domain of electrical power systems. They use digital technology, communication networks, and data analytics to change conventional grids into smart, adaptive, and environmentally friendly energy infrastructure. Nevertheless, it is crucial to tackle issues like cybersecurity and privacy for making the most of these smart energy systems. There is a crucial role of SG in guiding a sustainable future as our energy requirements change. The management of energy includes overseeing, regulating, and improving energy consumption in various sectors like commercial, residential, transportation and industrial. It has a crucial function in smart grids by enhancing grid efficiency and promoting sustainable energy practices. SG offers the necessary technology and infrastructure for modern grid control, while energy management tactics assist consumers and utilities in making informed decisions to minimize energy waste and expenses. This chapter investigates the progress of intelligent grid systems for promoting sustainable energy usage in buildings and urban spaces, aiming to decrease energy consumption and reduce CO 2 emissions. It highlights the advantages associated with SGs, in conjunction with energy management principles. Additionally, the chapter explores the driving factors behind the improvement of existing power distribution systems. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the energy management control measures, two simulators—one for the home and one for the grid—are discussed. The chapter elucidates the assessment of environmental advantages, encompassing an economic analysis of the energy management system (EMS). The evaluation of ecological benefits additionally portrays evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of the EMS with renewable energy. Further advancements and future scope of SG in energy management efficiency are discussed, with the conclusions completing the chapter.
