Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly known as 3D printing, has revolutionized manufacturing processes by enabling the creation of complex geometries with unprecedented design flexibility. The precise control of fluid flow dynamics throughout the printing process is essential for the success of AM. This chapter examines the fundamental principles of fluid mechanics as they pertain to AM, discussing the behavior of fluids in extrusion-based and powder-based printing techniques. Challenges such as nozzle clogging, surface tension effects, and the influence of temperature and viscosity on fluid flow are identified, highlighting the importance of addressing these issues for optimal print quality and efficiency. Strategies for enhancing fluid flow control, including advanced nozzle design, computational fluid dynamics simulations, and feedback control systems, are explored. Additionally, experimental studies and case examples illustrate the impact of fluid flow on print quality and showcase advancements in fluid flow management. Looking forward on this, future research opportunities are discussed, including the integration of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence for adaptive process control. Understanding and optimizing fluid flow in AM processes are crucial steps toward advancing the capabilities and applications of this transformative manufacturing technology.
