Abstract

This chapter introduces the key phenomenon of electrical impulses. It also introduces the concept of dynamic motifs and the Morris-Lecar model that is used throughout most of the book to illustrate the motifs. Although individual nerve cells are quite complicated and have many types of ion channels, the simple Morris-Lecar model is capable of generating most of the dynamic motifs seen in more complicated models.
