Abstract

This chapter describes the phenomenon of excitability, in which sufficiently large perturbations from a rest state produce a large excursion away from rest. This impulse reflects fast positive feedback for the upstroke and slower negative feedback for the downstroke. A key element of excitability in a neural model is a cubic-like voltage nullcline, described in this chapter.
