Abstract

Many neurons produce periodic impulse trains, a phenomenon called tonic spiking. This chapter describes the behavior and how it is brought about through subcritical and supercritical Hopf bifurcations. In the phase plane, periodic motion is seen as a closed trajectory called a limit cycle, also discussed in this chapter.
