Abstract

It is often the case that neurons produce periodic bursts of activity separated by a period of quiescence. This is called bursting and has been the focus of many mathematical models and model analyses. This chapter describes two bursting models, the Chay-Keizer model and the phantom bursting model, and how their dynamics can be analyzed through a fast-slow analysis. This analysis separates the original model into a fast subsystem (the layer problem) and a slow subsystem (the reduced problem), analyzing each separately before gluing them back together.
