Abstract

In this chapter, the fundamental concepts necessary for understanding more complex topics in later chapters are presented. The topics serve as essential prerequisites for achieving a deep comprehension of engineering-related subjects. The chapter begins by outlining the different levels of exploring engineering, followed by an investigation of the importance of a philosophical perspective with close emphasis on the philosophy of science and technology. To provide a broad vision of engineering, its place within the comprehensive map of knowledge and its connections with other scientific disciplines are discussed. Furthermore, to help readers grasp the practical essence of engineering, several everyday-life applications are illustrated. Finally, key technical concepts relevant to engineering, including units, dimensions, and essential mathematical and physical concepts are introduced.
