Abstract

Energy harvesting, in general, is a process of capturing and storing small amounts of energy from ambient sources. It has emerged as a primary alternative for powering low-energy devices. At the heart of this process is the rectifying antenna, or Rectenna, which efficiently captures electromagnetic energy from its surroundings and converts it into usable DC power. This chapter focuses on RF energy harvesting using Rectennas and discusses the most in-depth investigation of the principles, design, and development of this highly important technology for low-energy systems. Details are provided on how Rectennas convert RF signals to DC power and delve into important foundational principles of Rectenna technology, including key design considerations and recent advances in circuit and material designs that enhance performance and efficiency. Various current studies are therefore employed to explain the practical applications of RF energy harvesting in the context of wireless sensor networks, IoT devices and environmental monitoring, among other issues. This chapter determines and summarizes the challenge of optimizing Rectenna systems to suit various environments and different power conditions and helps bring out the present development and future research direction. This large-scale research underlines the prospects and potential of RF energy harvesting as an alternative, sustainable energy option in this highly interconnected world.
