Twin Studies on Functional Capacity
Abstract
The functional capacity of an individual is the result of interaction between heredity and environment. However, wide inter-individual variability exists in adaptive responses, and one wonders to what extent individual differences are attributable to genetic variation and to what extent to environmental conditions. From a comparison of intra-pair differences between identical and non-identical twins, it is possible to answer this question since, in effect, phenotypic variability in identical twins is due solely to environmental agents, whereas that in non-identical twins is due to both genetic fluctuations and extragenetic influences.
