Abstract

The introduction of the muscle biopsy technique (Bergström, 1962) has made it possible in recent years to analyse the structure of the human skeletal muscle and its bioenergetic systems. There is ample evidence on the distribution of muscle fibre types (Gollnick, Armstrong, Säubert IV, Piehl and Saltin, 1972 a; Gollnick, Piehl, Säubert IV, Armstrong and Saltin, 1972 b; Schmalbruch, 1970), cellular ultrastructure (Hoppeier, Lüthi, Claassen, Weibel and Howald, 1973; Kiessling, Piehl and Lundquist, 1971; Morgan, Cobb, Short, Ross and Gunn, 1971), and activities of cellular enzymes (Gollnick et al, 1972 a; Holloszy, 1965; Holloszy, Oscai, Don and Molé, 1970; Moesch and Howald, 1975; Pette and Staudte, 1971).
