Abstract

The skin, the largest organ in the human body by surface area, protects the underlying tissues from mechanical injuries, infections, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, extreme temperatures, and other forms of damage. Sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and hair follicles are embedded within the epidermis. The extracellular matrix (ECM), blood vessels, and sensory receptors of the dermis, which lies beneath the epidermis, provide the skin with strength, nourishment, and immune defenses. Adipose tissue in the subcutaneous layer lies below the dermis. This layer stores energy and continuously supplies the dermis with growth factors.
