Abstract

The skin, the body’s largest organ, shields internal organs and defends against environmental threats such as pathogens and dehydration by serving as a physical and chemical barrier. Despite its protective role, it is also the most injured organ. The ability of the skin to protect itself from pathogens becomes more challenging when damaged by conditions, such as arterial insufficiency, chronic venous insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, infections, and any skin wound. In severe cases, complete re-epithelialization, such as in full-thickness skin defects, can take a long time ( Hoque & Haldar, 2017 ).
