Biotechnology Applications in Male Sterility
Abstract
Male sterility, the inability of plants to produce viable pollen, is a critical trait in the production of hybrid crops. Hybrid breeding relies on cross-pollination between two genetically distinct parent lines to produce offspring exhibiting heterosis, or hybrid vigor. This results in superior traits such as increased yield, pest resistance, stress tolerance, and better quality. Traditional methods for inducing male sterility, such as manual emasculation or natural cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility (CGMS), are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and often impractical for large-scale hybrid seed production. Biotechnology has revolutionized this field by introducing precise, efficient, and scalable methods to develop male sterile lines, offering unprecedented control and flexibility in hybrid breeding programs.
