Abstract

The concept of Essentially Derived Varieties (EDVs) plays a significant role in modern plant breeding and intellectual property rights. Introduced under the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), EDVs are new plant varieties that retain most of their genetic makeup from an original (initial) variety but exhibit distinct characteristics achieved through specific breeding techniques. The development of EDVs allows breeders to innovate within the genetic framework of protected varieties, ensuring both the propagation of improved traits and the safeguarding of breeders’ rights. The generation of EDVs is achieved through advanced techniques such as marker-assisted selection (MAS), genetic engineering, and mutagenesis. These methods ensure precision in deriving novel varieties while maintaining substantial conformity to the initial variety.
