Abstract

Selection is one of the most critical processes in plant breeding, as it involves the identification and isolation of desirable plant types from a population to improve specific traits. This method serves as the foundation of all crop improvement programs. Selection is essential for distinguishing and enhancing traits that are valuable for agriculture, such as yield, disease resistance, stress tolerance, and quality attributes. It is one of two fundamental steps in breeding programs, the other being the creation of genetic variation.
