Abstract

The preceding chapters of the Slope Monitoring Guidelines have comprehensively developed the ‘why, what and how’ for building and using slope monitoring for mine safety, slope and mine design, and geotechnical risk management. The rest of the Guidelines focuses on putting the principles and theories into practice. The success of even the best-thought-out and -implemented monitoring system depends entirely on who uses it, and how and where it is used. The effective use of geotechnical monitoring is critical to modern mining, not only for the obviously necessary safety benefits but also because the ability to monitor and interpret slope stability conditions elevates mining from a chance endeavour to a reliable business venture.
