Textcoherence and self-explanation in learning physics with multimedia
Abstract
Two aspects of learning physics with computer based multimedia are central for the planned empirical research. Both the improvement of text composition and the activation of the learners are promising strategies in order to support the learning process. The combination of local textcoherence plus text-picture references and the instruction for self-explanation are chosen as independent variables matching assumptions and findings from science education, cognitive psychology, and research on multimedia learning and theory on text comprehension. In a laboratory study with a 2*2 design the knowledge acquisition is tested as the dependent variable. A computerbased learning program about diffraction of light at a single slit is designed for the aims of the study. Given the problems connected with language and text in learning physics, and the future importance of computerbased learning, the results of the study will help to improve the design of computer programs, and their implementation, with the objective of higher learning outcomes.
