Strength and bifurcation of barrelled composite cylinders
Abstract
Results of a parametric study into buckling and first ply failure of bowed out cylinders, subjected to static external pressure, are discussed. It is shown that substantial pressure increases can be achieved through barrelling. This can be further enhanced by varying the lamination angles. The effect of imperfections in lamination angles, and the effect of top/bottom edge boundary conditions on the buckling strength are also discussed.
