Abstract

We propose a 4-node C° shell element with the drilling degree of freedom, appropriate for shell structures undergoing large displacements and rotations. The element is developed within the 6-field theory of irregular shell structures. To avoid the well-known locking phenomena, the proposed element combines two techniques: the Assumed Natural Strain (ANS) for shear locking and the Enhanced Assumed Strain (EAS) for membrane locking. The performance of the element is evaluated on three classical benchmark problems.
