Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose and investigate steel connections with an energy absorption device. The energy absorption device is composed of an angle and a vertical rib with a slit and a hole, which is named as AVER. Initially, four types of energy absorption devices, AVERs, were tested under cyclic loading. Test results showed that the AVER both with the angle and the vertical rib is superior to the typical angle in view of energy absorption capacity. The dissipated energy of vertical rib without a hole decreased extremely high so that a hole at a slit end should be additionally installed. Further beam-to-column connection test with an AVER also revealed that connection with AVER developed significantly good deformation capacity.
