Abstract

This paper describes a modification to linear equations describing the dynamic response of a vessel to represent fluctuations in its hydrostatics and hydrodynamics with the ingress and egress of seawater to the hull. These equations are solved in the time-domain using a 2D (pitch and heave) strip theory model of a prismatic hullform in regular waves. At each time-step a flooding model is applied to calculate the transient characteristics of seawater flow into the ship. The vessel's motions and total vertical shear force and bending moment distributions are then calculated. Although simplistic, this analysis allows a first look at the sensitivity of loading analysis to a variable floodwater mass. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
