Abstract

The use of process-based numerical morphological models to make both diagnostic and prognostic “brute-force” simulations of morphological evolution requires little explanation: the model is run for a designated simulation period starting from a specified initial condition. During the simulation time series of forcing conditions must be specified. For diagnostic simulations these forcing conditions normally consist of observed water-level, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, river discharge, and ocean swell conditions. For prognostic simulations, the stochastic nature of wind, wave and other forcing processes requires more careful consideration, often resulting in the use of forcing time series derived from mean annual or seasonal climates, and sensitivity testing of deviations around this mean.
