Abstract

In the field of patient safety, anesthesia is viewed as a pioneer. Indeed, it is generally agreed that this medical specialty has become safer through important advances in pharmacology, improvements in monitoring techniques and professional commitment to safe practice standards ( Gaba, 2000 ). Research in other “ultra safe” systems has shown that traditional approaches to risk reduction can no longer improve security. An alternative approach may consist in developing resilience, which means improving the ability of teams to cope with the various disturbances they may encounter ( Hollnagel, Woods & Leveson, 2006 ). In this context, the objective of this study is to better understand this adaptive ability developed by anesthetists through their daily practice, in order to find ways to improve resilience.
