Influence of parental presence in the emotional status of children admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit
Abstract
Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) have been traditionally closed units. Critically ill children were frequently separated from their parents which has been shown to be a significant cause of suffering and anxiety. In the last years, some PICUs have opened their doors in order to let parents join their children and some improvements have been described regarding cardio-circulatory complications, reducing patient&s;s anxiety and hormonal stress indicators.
