Safety patient in ICU: “Bacteremia Zero Project”
Abstract
Anesthesiologists have an excellent opportunity to influence safety and quality of patient care. Also since the earliest step of the anesthesiology, they have worked to improve patient safety. In order to increase the patient safety, the European Board of Anesthesiology (EBA), in cooperation with the European Society of Anesthesiology (ESA), has developed a Declaration on Patient Safety in Anesthesiology. (The Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anesthesiology). The Agency of Quality, in collaboration with WHO, has started a pilot project (“Bacteremia Zero Project”) in the NHS for the prevention of the catheter-related infections in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) as main objective. To create a network of ICU with real safety practices and support culture of safety in the ICU of the SNS are other objectives of the project. This project uses a systematic approach focus on the research and development of PhD. Peter Pronovost (Johns Hopkins University, Michigan). As part of an initiative to improve ICU patient safety we have developed an application of “Bacteremia Zero Project” focus on two activities: control and handling of Central Via Catheter (CVC) in order to complete the main objective and an global safety program for the other ones. This communications shows first results of the application of this program in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
