Musculoskeletal disorders in caregivers of children with cerebral palsy following multilevel surgery
Abstract
The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) is increasing among caregivers such as nurses, occupational therapists and physical therapists as their job often involve moving, transferring, lifting and repositioning patients. Although musculoskeletal risks for medical health caregivers is well known, risk factors in informal caregivers such as parents who also undergo similar demanding tasks while taking care of their children undergoing rehabilitation for locomotor disabilities is still not well reported. Post surgically, parents/caregivers had to transfer the child from bed to wheel chair, carry the child to the rehabilitation centre, on the staircase and at home till he/she was able to walk independently. The goal of the study was to find out prevalence, causes, regional distribution and types of musculoskeletal disorders in caregivers of children with cerebral palsy following multilevel surgery.
