The management of Risk through a systematic approach in children affected by retinoblastoma and treated by superselective intraarterial injection of Melphalan through the ophthalmic artery: Our experience
Abstract
Our hospital has recently been performing an experimental procedure for treating pediatric patients afflicted by retinoblastoma, which consists of a superselective intrarterial injection of a chemotherapeutic agent (Melphalan) through the ophthalmic artery in the Angiography room by interventional neuroradiologistists. Such a procedure is characterized by risks generally associated to endovascular interventions, but above all by those correlated to the i) patients’ age, ii) procedural requirements precluding the use of certain anaesthetic pre-medication drugs, and iii) the experimental nature of the procudure.
