Neglect: An ergonomic assessment of the issues surrounding nursing and failures in care
Abstract
Recent headlines in the UK have made for dismal reading for registered nurses. A common denominator in the inquiries examining the health care tragedies at Mid Staffs NHS Trust and Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is the alleged poor standard of care offered by nursing staff. A common image of nurses portrayed by the UK popular press when health care scandals are reported is one of laziness, standoffishness and incompetence. Is this really the reality of contemporary nursing, or are there other factors at play?
