Abstract

Epidural catheter insertion is a complex technical task, requiring a sterile environment, that is often performed in challenging time-pressured situations (e.g. advanced labour). Transforming this hazard-rich procedure into one of low risk requires a combination of training (adaptation of human workers to needs and limitations of the task environment) and ergonomics (adaptation of the task environment to the needs and limitations of the human worker).
