Abstract

Hospital bed shortages are a common occurrence in the NHS. One of the main precipitants of ‘bed crises’ is bed blocking by medically fit patients. The NHS is unable to discharge patients until it is deemed safe for them to return home therefore patients are remaining in hospital for social reasons not medical.
