Abstract

Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is a highly efficient method for the separation of complex solutions into their individual components. Electrophoresis serves a similar purpose, though the techniques and fields of application of the two methods differ significantly. Of the various modalities of electrophoresis, only flat-bed separation, mainly on gel substrates, is considered here. Although originally densitometry was used mainly for qualitative analysis, it is now more and more used for quantitative determinations. Smaller and smaller sample volumes are analyzed, and the demands upon accuracy are steadily increasing.
