Abstract

4 “Ion-exchange chromatography is as far from exchanging ions as chromatography is from color writing.” This adage by Helfferich [ 1 ] concisely indicates how different and various can be the mechanisms that are summarized as ion-exchange equilibria. Ion-exchange reactions are involved not only in ion chromatography, which makes use of anionic or cationic stationary phases, but also in reversed-phase chromatographic systems, such as reversed-phase ion-pair chromatography.
