Erasure and Error Control in RRNS
Abstract
In some situations such as presence of interference or a transient malfunction, it may be desirable for the decoder to correct erasures in addition to errors. In this chapter we show that an RRNS code can be used as an error control code with a receiver that is capable of declaring a residue digit erased when the receiver recognizes the presence of interference or a transient malfunction. We establish the relationship between minimum distance and erasure correcting capability of the RRNS. Based on the mathematical framework developed in this chapter for the RRNS, new algorithms are derived for simultaneously correcting multiple erasures and single errors and detecting multiple errors.
