Abstract

Advances in workstation technology have historically outpaced corresponding software improvements. Sophisticated computer processing chips have, in general, been available years before the operating system software was able to exploit them (e.g., 32-bit processing technology was available on workstations well before any 32-bit software came out of the development laboratories). Application and corresponding systems support software has also lagged.
