Abstract

The overwhelmingly favorable economics of software reuse have been apparent for over 30 years. Unfortunately, the systematic reuse of application software has been elusive. Most organizations have no planned approach to the identification, evaluation, storage, and dissemination of proven application code. Highly productive individual programmers do reuse their own code, but often just in a “cut and paste” manner within their own programs. Interestingly, however, most programmers willingly reuse operating system, compiler, telecommunication, database, and system utilities code.
