Abstract
Traditional, customized development has in many cases become too expensive, and protracted development times may cause organizations to miss business windows of opportunity. The purchase of packages and off-the-shelf components, as well as contracted development, can offer major payoffs in cost reduction and speed of delivery. Due to the competition in every quarter, organizations would be far more vulnerable to major business risk if they did not seek alternatives to traditional development. However, the new approaches themselves pose many dangers.
