Abstract

The Internet has been around for years, but private industry only became interested in its commercial possibilities after the graphical World Wide Web emerged during the early 1990s. The Web version of the Internet offered a potentially inexpensive and platform-independent network over which to conduct business and disseminate information. In addition, companies grew excited about the possibility of developing intranets (internal Internets) that would give them access to all of their legacy data via one simple Internet browser interface.
