Abstract

Java is different from other commonly used programming languages because object code is not compiled into machine instructions for a given machine, but instead is designed to be interpreted by the Java Virtual Machine. This would imply a very substantial performance degradation from compiled languages like C++. The process of performance improvement in this environment is discussed and demonstrated step by step using a specific Java case study application. It will be shown that while the techniques for improving performance are somewhat different for Java than for compiled languages, the potential for reducing a Java application&s;s execution time is huge.
