Software Architectures for Distributed DBMSs in a Client/Server Environment
Abstract
A client/server architecture consists of several computers connected by a communications system. Some computers act as servers, and some act as clients. A user interacts with a client to formulate requests for information. The requests are transmitted to one or more servers through a communications system for processing. Each server accesses its local database or file system to respond to the requests and transmits the results back to the client through the communications system. The client/server architecture also allows multiple users to share data by accessing data on a data server through multiple clients.
